The Rarity Check is a free dating standards calculator that estimates what percent of men or women meet all of your dating criteria at once. You set your preferences (the gender you are attracted to, age range, height, minimum income, ethnicity, religion, political views, education, marital status, whether they have children, and whether they smoke or drink), and the tool instantly returns a percentage and an estimated count of adults who clear every filter.

Read this before you read your number
Every filter you add multiplies, so the number falls much faster than most people expect. Two preferences that each keep half the population do not leave you half a pool, they leave you a quarter. Five such filters leave you about three percent. That is arithmetic, not a statement about you or about how hard your search is.
Three things worth knowing before you draw conclusions from your result:
It multiplies, it does not observe. The Rarity Check treats each filter as statistically independent, because no public dataset publishes every combination of traits together. Real traits are correlated. Taller people earn slightly more on average, and education and income move together. That means a heavily filtered result is usually a little pessimistic. Read it as an order of magnitude, not a headcount.
Add filters one at a time. The useful move is not the final percentage, it is watching which single preference costs you the most. Set everything you care about, then remove one filter at a time and see which one moves the number hardest. That is the one worth thinking about.
A small number is not a diagnosis. Rare is not the same as impossible, and it says nothing about whether you will meet someone. People do not meet by random sampling from a national pool, they meet through work, friends, neighborhoods, and introductions, all of which are already filtered. A low percentage means your combination is uncommon. It does not mean you are being unreasonable, and it does not mean you will be alone.
How the math works
The Rarity Check works in three steps. First, you choose the gender you are attracted to and set your filters. Second, the tool looks up how common each preference is in the adult population for that gender and area. Third, it combines those shares into a single estimate of the percent and number of people who meet every standard at once.
To combine the filters, it multiplies the population share of each criterion together, treating the filters as statistically independent. For example, the share of men who are over six feet tall is multiplied by the share who earn above your income threshold, and so on for every box you set. Because real traits are correlated rather than perfectly independent, the result is a modeled estimate rather than an exact count.
The pool is unmarried adults only. Every percentage and count you see is a share of people who are never married, divorced, or widowed, not of the whole adult population.
The Rarity Check then translates that percentage into a lived dating timeline. Using the unmarried, age-appropriate pool, it estimates how long it would take to meet one qualifying person if you went on a first date every week, phrased as a first date every week for roughly N years. This timeline is the most concrete way to feel how selective a set of standards is.
Changing the area updates the underlying figures. Selecting a metro swaps in that metro's own demographics for age, income, ethnicity, education, and marital status, so the Rarity Check shows dating odds that reflect that city rather than one nationwide number.
Data sources, accuracy, and privacy
The Rarity Check is built on real public data, attributed by dimension. Population, age, income, marital status, education, and ethnicity come from the U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey. Height, smoking, and drinking come from the CDC. Religion comes from Pew Research. Sexual orientation comes from Gallup and the Williams Institute at UCLA.
Metro figures are pulled per area from the ACS 1-year tables: population and age from B01001 and education from B15002 (2023), marital status from B12001, ethnicity from B03002, and income from B19326 (2024). Religion, politics, and orientation are national figures applied to every area, because no comparable per-metro source exists for most of the 37 metros. One figure is an assumption rather than a measurement: the American Community Survey has no Middle Eastern or North African category until 2030, so that share is estimated rather than counted.
The Rarity Check produces estimates, not exact counts. Because the filters are treated as statistically independent and modeled from public datasets, a low percentage means your combination of standards is rare in the population, not that a precise number of named people exists. Results are best read as a directional reality check, useful for comparing how much each added filter shrinks your pool.
